Honda Insight’s Eco Assist™

Honda edges out Hyundai-Kia and Toyota to be named most fuel efficient automaker for its US models. The results are based upon averages across their entire lineup of cars which for Honda was 23.6 mpg[1]. Hyundai-Kia captured 2nd place with a 23.4 mpg average while Toyota came in at 23.2 mpg. Judging by these close averages, the auto manufacturers are doing everything they can to increase efficiency.

There is a lot of demand for fuel efficiency and hybrids while the electric vehicle production starts getting into full swing. Hybrids like the Honda Insight pushing 43 mpg[1] on the highway are raising the bar, making the competition for most fuel efficient Hybrid an accolade sought by many of the manufacturers. The Insight is up against cars like the Toyota Prius and the Lexus HS 250h which all compete for the least polluting and most fuel efficient compact car.

Integrated into the new 2010 Honda Insight is Honda’s Eco Assist™, a monitor and feedback system for keeping an eye on driving habits. These indications allow for the car to report back to the driver how heavy they’ve been on the pedal. As the driver becomes more aware of the most efficient driving habits they are advanced from beginner, middle, and expert levels with tiers of recognition and awards.

By making the 2010 Honda Insight a fun and challenging experience, people will understand and begin to alter their driving habits. For example at speeds around 50 mph the instrument panel will illuminate with a green background to show that the vehicle is operating at optimum efficiency.

There are Insight base model, the LX starts at a base price of $19,800 while the 2010 Toyota Prius base price is $22,750. The Honda Insight’s Eco Assist™ system is a standard feature on the base LX model. This is a great value in comparison to the Toyota Prius which costs $3000 more.

Honda’s EV-N – A Solar Electric Car

The auto manufacturers are coming up with some slick concept vehicles these days, and this one from Honda just might raise the bar once again for the best electric car.  They call it the EV-N and its a battery powered with a solar panel for a roof.

The interior is what you’d imagine the car to have looking at it from the outside.  Its almost got that iPod or Mac style going on with the really clean design.  In addition to it looking clean, it has a really interesting bonus build into the side of the passenger door.  It’s called a U3-X robo-unicycle and it seems like the offspring of the famed Segway and is a very cool feature of the car.

The seats are made with a removable fabric system so you an change it out for another color or pattern.  The front grill area has some type of illuminating system for communication.  The rest of the car is fairly simple, and may become quite popular for those who don’t travel far from the home.  With so many jobs that allow you to work from your home, this might make sense for the occasional trip down to the post office or grocery store.

While the simplicity is there, it still seems to be lacking something before it could really appeal to a large audience.  It could just be the lack of or empty appearance on the inside that gives it that golf cart type feeling.  An interior can make or break a deal no matter what the car can do mechanically, simply because people want to have an experience.  It could be the luxury of leather seats, the onboard media systems, or a design that is attractive enough to stare at for as long as you drive the car.  The EV-N just seems to be missing that experience, and perhaps its quite common for concept cars to have that sense they are missing something.

Honda Crosstour – Balances Sport And Utility

The Honda Crosstour just recently starting hitting showroom floors across the US. This new Honda has been bred with the best performance and utility features that Honda has to offer. The Crosstour is a blessing if you happen to need cargo space, but want to drive something a little more sporty. The performance you get combined with the overall capacity for cargo makes it so you don’t have to give one up for the other. With the massive cargo space in the back, it can be a great choice for those who frequently travel and work out of their car. You get an SUV with the performance of an Accord that makes about 260 horsepower with its 3.5L i-VTEC V6 engine.

Honda has some great utility features in their cars, and the Crosstour is another example. In the back when you open the hatch there are compartments with removable trays that can be configured to maximize the cargo space. When you lower the back seats you can see there is a tremendous amount of space, plenty of room for a mountain bike or other equipment.
Whether you are into biking, camping or sports, you’ll have no problem stowing your gear in the Crosstour and still having room to pick up the groceries on the way home. There are few cars that really bring all of these qualities together into a single vehicle without comprimising the look. If you’ve never driven an Accord, you’d be surprised at how quick they are. Then combine that with the benefits of all the cargo space and you’ll be able to get a lot of use out of this vehicle.

For the home repair do-it-yourselfers out there the Crosstour would work out well for trips to the lumber yard. The back of the Crosstour should have some type of full length rubber mat that would cover the entire area if the seats were folded down. That way if you wanted to use it for carrying some materials it would protect the interior.

There are some really interesting uses for this car and would suit a family quite well. It has features that would appeal to the stay at home mom who has her kids in lots of activities like soccer, dance, volleyball, etc. It also appeals to the guy who travels for business and wants something a little more sporty than a SUV but with the cargo room.

Finally, you might find yourself eyeballing the Crosstour for that next Oklahoma Sooners game on Nov. 28th. Open the back, lift out the tray and wala, you have the perfect built-in ice chest to let the tailgating party begin.
